Most people have no idea what I am talking about when I tell them that I am a medical coding specialist. Therefore, I am quite used to explaining what it is that I do for a living. As a medical coding specialist, I take the documentation of the medical services that the patients receive and translate them into a special medical code that makes it easier for the billing to be handled properly. The coding is quicker to work with than the long medical phrases that describe the services. In addition, it is easier for the computers to read what services were performed as well as whether an insurance company or the patient is to be billed for any remaining fees after the initial fees that were made at the time of the service. After I explain my job to people, some of them tell me that I am basically doing a data entry job. It doesn’t matter to me what other people think about my job because I like it. It is rather easy for me to do this job and the medical coding salary that I earn is wonderful compared to other salaries that I had in the past. I found out that I could do my medical coding job from my own home, but I decided against that. I really like the social aspect of going to work with all of the other people at the office. By working at the office I not only earn my medical coding salary, but I also have health benefits through the company and paid vacation time as well as some paid sick days. Besides that, I have doubts that I would be able to make the same Medical coding salary if I worked at home because I would need to find my own clientele and make my own work schedule. I think that I would be too distracted at home and it would be too hard for me to maintain a regular work schedule. I prefer to stick with working at the office enjoying all of the benefits including my great medical coding salary.
